The fifth pillar of Islam-Hajj

fifth pillar of Islam-Hajj

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. After completing the other four obligations, Hajj is the last one obligatory on every wealthy Muslim once a year. In the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims travel to the holy city of Makkah and other sacred cities in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. Unlike the other pillars of Islam, Hajj is a worship in which Muslims bear not only physical struggle but also financial struggle. Every mature and sane Muslim who has the fixed amount of wealth prescribed by Allah SWT is obliged to go to Makkah and appear before Allah and perform Hajj.

Benefits of Hajj

Every religious ritual brings us countless benefits both in this life and the afterlife. The most notable benefit of Hajj is that Muslims present their selves in front of Allah. They all gather in Makka equally and perform all rituals, which prompt brotherhood and equality among Muslims.

Some understandable benefits of Hajj are:

Hajj teaches endurance

Going to Makka for Hajj is tiring and a hard toil that Muslims do. While going for Hajj teaches how to be persistent and patient and bear the hot sun of Saudi Arabia.

Historical journey

Along with a religious ritual, Hajj is a historical journey. When Muslims go for Hajj, they witness certain historical places. While performing Hajj, you can pay a visit to Mount Hira, where Hazrat Muhammad SAW used meditation, and there first time Allah revealed Quran to him.

Forgiveness from the Lord

After performing Hajj, Allah SWT forgives all the sins that a man had committed before going to Makkah. In Hajj, a man directly calls to Allah that I am present. I am present.

Hajj and Quran

The importance of Hajj is determined by the fact that Allah SWT many times in the holy Quran direct Muslims to perform Hajj in the month of Zel Hajj. As Allah says in Quran: “And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].” [2;125]

We read above the during Hajj, Muslim bear extreme toil and hardship. “Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing”. [2:158]

Hajj and Hadith

Our beloved Prophet instructs us in Hadith about the greatness of Hajj. We are well aware of the Islamic history that how Hazrat Mohammad SAW and his companion RA struggled to reach Makkah and how the non-believer restricted them. However, despite that prohibition, at last the day came When Rasool SAW visited along with his friends RA to perform Hajj.

Many times Rasool SAW tells us about Hajj: O people! Hajj (pilgrimage to the House of Allah) has been made incumbent upon you, so perform Hajj.[book 10: hadith 2]

No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hajj).[book 13: hadith 18]
